The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes offense is clearly more potent now with the additions of Aramis Garcia, Christian Arroyo, Skyler Ewing, etc. than they were at the beginning of the season. They've proven that over the past three days by scoring 29 runs in a three-game series against the Boise Hawks.
Last night's romp produced 16 of those 29 runs. Both Arroyo and Ewing homered — Arroyo his third and Ewing his fifth. Arroyo added four RBIs while Ewing and Austin Slater contributed three each. Slater has 19 hits in 38 at-bats with the Volcanoes.
AZL Giants: It was Michael Santos night in the AZL, where you can always guarantee five innings from the 19-year-old. He didn't disappoint on Saturday night, pitching, yes, five innings and allowing zero earned runs on two hits and no walks. He dropped his season ERA to 1.98 while his WHIP is at a highly respectable 1.06 through 10 starts. Since 2008, only two pitchers have thrown more than 50 innings in the AZL and kept an ERA below two.
If you haven't seen the video of Santos I shot a few weeks ago, you can check it out here. Potential plus curveball. No doubt.
Other Notable Performances: Augusta lefty Christian Jones had a nice line yesterday, going six strong with one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight. The Danville, Calif. native has a 3.22 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 19 starts for the GreenJackets.
—Michael Connolly struck out five in two perfect innings for the AZL squad.
