Blackburn throws gem, strikes out career high

It was a breakout day for Giants No. 7 prospect Clayton Blackburn on the mound Saturday afternoon. The big right-hander had his breaking ball working to perfection as he struck out a career-high 11 batters while allowing just three hits and no runs. Unfortunately, it was a scoreless pitcher's duel when Blackburn exited the game after the eighth, earning him a no-decision.

Blackburn's previous career high was 10, which he had done three previous times including one earlier this season and twice in 2012 with the Augusta GreenJackets.

One interesting note about Blackburn's outing: the Portland Sea Dogs' announcers mentioned multiple times how surprised they were with the amount of breaking balls he was throwing. They estimated that Blackburn, who throws both a curveball and a slider, likely threw a breaking pitch of some variety for almost 50 percent of his pitches.

Brian Ragira, who homered twice in Friday night's San Jose Giants game, hit another one Saturday night in a Stockton ballpark where the ball is just jumping. The two teams have combined to hit 10 in the last two games, with San Jose accounting for seven of them. Ragira is 6-for-his-last-8 with three home runs, a double, and six RBIs. Tyler Horan, who entered the game with a .633 slugging percentage in 13 games with San Jose, added a home run and two doubles.

—Rehabbing right-hander Keury Mella threw his third outing since joining the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, and threw three more solid innings. In three games, Mella has pitched six innings, allowed one unearned run on three hits and one walk, and struck out six.

—GreenJackets lefty Steven Messner threw seven scoreless innings on the road against the Asheville Tourists, a team with a 79-45 record entering Saturday's game. Messner allowed just two baserunners during his seven shutout frames.
