Gustavo Cabrera debuts, Johnson goes seven deep

BOX SCORES: SAC / RIC / SJ / AUG

The much-anticipated debut of Gustavo Cabrera at the full-season level took place Tuesday at home in Augusta as the former international signee played left field and batted seventh in the order. Cabrera, who is still just 20 years old, struck out swinging in his first at-bat made loud contact in the fourth and doubled into the left-center field gap. Video provided by David Lee.

The hit scored Dylan Davis, who had doubled himself three batters earlier, and Cabrera finished the game going 2-for-4, singling in the sixth on a line drive hit right back to the pitcher. The rise and fall of Cabrera will be in his ability to field, which didn't look awesome in spring training, and the ability to make consistent contact without rising strikeout totals.

Jordan Johnson pitched maybe the most efficient game of the season for any Giants minor leaguer. The Elk Grove native went seven innings into a 1-0 game before ending the inning at 79 pitches. Johnson got Cain'd as the San Jose Giants lost 1-0. For a guy who struck out 10.8 batters per nine in 2015, it was strange to see only two punch outs in the box score through seven, but the Lake Elsinore Storm were helping him out in other ways, like swinging and putting the ball in play on the first pitch for an out six of seven times.

OTHER NOTES

Kyle Crick returned to the disappointing 2014-2015 Kyle Crick, which involves being pulled before finishing the fifth due to pitch count and more than a walk issued per inning. Through 9.2 innings pitched in 2016, he has just four strikeouts.

— It was another rough outing for Ty Blach, who uncharacteristically lasted only three innings and walked three. He walked an average of 1.7 per nine innings last season with Sacramento, but through three starts, is averaging 4.9 this year.
