Richmond bullpen masterful after Mejia's rough outing

BOX SCORES: SAC / RIC / SJ / AUG

The Richmond Flying Squirrels were in trouble when starting pitcher Adalberto Mejia was pulled from his fourth start of the season after 41 pitches in 0.2 innings. Mejia allowed a parade of baserunners through three hits and three walks, all after he had gotten the first two outs of the game.

To the rescue were four bullpen arms that would go the rest of the game (8.1 innings) giving up zero runs on one hit and two walks. Santiago Casilla's younger brother Jose Casilla entered in the first, going the next three innings, as well, followed by Pedro Rodriguez, Tyler Rogers, and the third save of the year by Ray Black. Rodriguez pitched innings five through seven, while Rogers and Black handled the eighth and ninth as the Flying Squirrels pulled out a win after being down 4-0 in the first.

Black issued his seventh walk in 7.2 innings, but raised his strikeout total to 17. Rogers still has not allowed a run, earned or unearned, in 10.2 innings.

Providing half the offense was a bases-clearing Ricky Oropesa double in the ninth that put Richmond up two, while Rando Moreno (2), Christian Arroyo (2), Hunter Cole (2), and Tyler Horan (3) all had multi-hit games.

OTHER NOTES

Lucius Fox hit his second home run of the season — a three-run shot that put the GreenJackets up 3-2 in the third. Given that he's still just 18, many people aren't worried about his slow start, in which he's batting just .163 with 20 strikeouts in 51 plate appearances.

— San Jose scored 11 runs on 14 hits, led by pretty much everybody. All but three starters had RBIs and all but one recorded a hit. Aramis Garcia picked up three hits and 2 RBI, and scored three runs, as well.
