Bickford caps off brilliant opening month in Augusta

Phil Bickford made four starts in April, his first month playing for a full-season team. On Wednesday, he capped it off with a special touch. He pitched seven scoreless and walk-less innings, throwing an efficient 87 pitches and ridiculous 73 strikes. He was helped by a flurry of one-pitch outs, but still displayed dominant form in other ways like striking out nine and allowing just four hits.

Bickford induced 12 swinging strikes; impressive, but not nearly as impressive as his totals during his first and third starts of the season. On April 8 he forced 15 swing-throughs in 4.2 innings and just last week, he totaled 18 in only five innings. Twenty-one called strikes was a season-high for Bickford, but of course that also comes from throwing two more innings than any other start.

He ends April posting a 3.48 ERA, 0.871 WHIP, and 33/4 strikeout-to-walk ratio — third best in the South Atlantic League for pitchers tossing more than 20 innings — while the strikeout total overall is a league-leader.

— San Jose won its third game in a row, and will look for a sweep of the Stockton Ports with Andrew Suarez on the mound Thursday afternoon. Wednesday's 4-2 win featured a 3-RBI performance from Jose Vizcaino, Jr. and a bounce-back outing for Jason Forjet. Rodolfo Martinez picked up his fifth save, and lowered his ERA to 1.23. The lone highlight available from the game was this well-executed double play, started by Jonah Arenado.

— Richmond lost 6-3, but received great offensive nights from Ali Castillo (3 hits), Tyler Horan (home run), and Ryder Jones (sixth double of season).
