McCasland builds upon impressive season with no-hitter

A Giants' minor leaguer through a no-hitter on Sunday night, and it wasn't Phil Bickford, Sam Coonrod, Adalberto Mejia, Clayton Blackburn, or any of the guys you might expect. In a seven-inning doubleheader, it was Jake McCasland, a 26th round pick in 2013 out of the University of New Mexico who is repeating in the South Atlantic League at age 24.

RELATED:'s game story on McCasland's no-hitter

Going into the 2016 season, McCasland had made one pro start, coming in 2015, and owned a career ERA of 6.00 and 10.4 hits-per-nine-innings. But the Augusta GreenJackets' starting rotation turmoil gave McCasland the opportunity to start on June 13, and the near-perfect game was his sixth consecutive.

Despite McCasland being unheralded, some may have seen something like this coming. His five previous starts had all gone well, surviving five or more innings on all five occasions while compiling a 1.86 ERA and 1.000 WHIP. And overall in 2016, he's striking out almost a batter an inning with an even lower ERA — 1.67. McCasland's FIP is now at 2.87, which is fifth lowest among Giants' minor league starters.

McCasland needed just 72 pitches for his seven-inning no-hitter on Sunday night, surrendering a lone baserunner on his own error while striking out five.

"The error was on me. I ruined a perfect game for myself," McCasland told "I just dropped the ball. I don't know what happened, it just popped out of my glove. I can laugh about it."

Miguel Gomez debuted (finally) for the San Jose Giants, playing third base and batting in the five spot. He went 1-for-4 with a single (from the right side) while refusing to strike out. He's now gone 24 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout.

Jacob Heyward collected his first pro home run and yet another triple in Sunday night's game, bringing his extra-base hit total to 11 in his first nine games. Wow.
