Beede deals before taking pitch to helmet

BOX SCORES: SAC / RIC / AUG

Tyler Beede was doing it all in his sixth start of the year. He had pitched five strong, scoreless innings while recording a single at the plate and a stolen base on the paths. But in his second at-bat of the game, Beede took a curveball to the helmet courtesy of Washington Nationals top prospect Lucas Giolito. Beede walked off under his own power, but left the game as an understandable precaution. Beede updated the concerned populous with this tweet this morning.

Christian Arroyo picked up two more hits for the Flying Squirrels, including this RBI single back up the middle.

OTHER NOTES

Michael Santos pitched eight innings for the first time in his professional career, saving the GreenJackets' bullpen in a game that ended in the 13th inning. His previous high was 6.1 on April 19th of this year. Monday for Santos was a display of efficiency, needing 81 pitches to finish the eighth. He threw 51 strikes and struck out five, though his swinging strike count wasn't particularly high. Santos may prove to be a "pitch to contact" type, considering the high amount of ground balls and fly balls he forces during a game.

Miguel Gomez registered three more hits, including a double, as he raised his season average to .359. Aside from his first season in the Dominican Summer League, 2012, Gomez has never finished a season with a batting average lower than .315.
