As a weekly reminder of who's doing good things down in the minors, Giant Potential will name a "Prospect of the Week" every Thursday afternoon, along with a few honorable mentions, highlighting the best of San Francisco Giants hopefuls. For this second week, it's San Jose Giants right fielder Steven Duggar.
- Age: 22
- Hometown: Moore, S.C.
- Height/Weight: 6'2", 195 lbs
- Drafted: 2015, 6th round
- College: Clemson
- Key Stats: 6 XBH, 3 HR, 4 BB, .880 SLG
On April 15, right fielder Steven Duggar had proven to San Jose Giants manager Lipso Nava, with his .700 sluggling percentage, to be moved lower in the batting order into a more run-producing slot. The Clemson product had spent the first six games of the season batting in the two-hole, and since moving into the six spot, hitting behind Chris Shaw and Aramis Garcia, Duggar has maintained that slugging mark. He clubbed three home runs, two doubles, and a triple during the past week and driven in six of the team's 25 runs over that stretch. The home run total includes a multi-homer game on April 17 in the series finale against Inland Empire. Likely swinging more aggressively deeper in the order, Duggar has struck out at a higher rate (28%) compared to his 12% rate in his first six games. Still, Duggar is drawing walks and has an on-base percentage 92 points higher than his batting average.
At four home runs through the first two weeks of the year, Duggar is just one shy of his 2015 total with Clemson, which he did in 227 at-bats. Duggar's pro debut with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes was littered with hits, but didn't include the power numbers he is currently displaying. He batted .293/.390/.367 in 58 games, striking out at a 19.5% clip.
(*There were no highlights available from this week. So take a peek at his first home run of 2016, from April 11, and a diving catch from last season in Salem-Keizer.)
