As a weekly reminder of who's doing good things down in the minors, Giant Potential will name a "Prospect of the Week" every Thursday afternoon, along with a few honorable mentions, highlighting the best of San Francisco Giants hopefuls. It's week eight, and it's June! For the first time, we honor a pitcher. It's Augusta GreenJackets right-handed starter Cory Taylor.
- Age: 22
- Hometown: Owasso, Okla.
- Height/Weight: 6'2", 255 lbs.
- Drafted: 2015, 8th round
- College: Dallas Baptist Univ.
- Key Stats: 2 GS, 13.2 IP, 12 H, 1 BB, 13 K, 1.98 ERA
What a string of starts Cory Taylor has put together. Over his last five outings, Taylor has posted a stellar 1.69 ERA, while striking out almost one batter per inning on average. During this past week, he made two starts and struck out 13 hitters while allowing just one walk and one earned run. Had it not been for a tough start to the seventh inning on Wednesday, he would have made it back-to-back unscathed outings.
Taylor has turned out to be easily one of Augusta's best starting pitchers, to go along with the organization's most recent first-round selection Phil Bickford, as well as young Dominican right-hander Michael Santos. All three players have WHIPs under 1.200, ERAs below 3.00, and fantastic strikeout-to-walk ratios, with Santos' coming out on top at 43/5.
Taylor, at age 22, is the oldest of the bunch, and a few more dominating starts might send him closer to a promotion, though it's Santos who has the most innings in the South Atlantic League under his belt. Look for Bickford to remain with the GreenJackets for the remainder of 2016, with Taylor and Santos inching closer to wearing a San Jose Giants uniform.
(*It's hard to find highlights of South Atlantic League players in general, and it's especially difficult to find good footage of pitchers. Many of you have already seen this, but it's better than nothing. It's Taylor throwing during minor league spring training.)
