As a weekly reminder of who's doing good things down in the minors, Giant Potential will name a "Prospect of the Week" every Thursday afternoon, along with a few honorable mentions, highlighting the best of San Francisco Giants hopefuls. It's week two and while some cooled off after hot starts, only one was truly outstanding over the previous seven days. It's the organization's top hitting prospect, Christian Arroyo.
SS, Christian Arroyo
- Age: 21
- Hometown: Brooksville, Fla.
- Height/Weight: 6'1", 180 lbs
- Drafted: 2013, 1st round
- School: Hernando H.S.
- Key Stats: 13 H, 3 HR, 0 K, .958 SLG
Christian Arroyo leads the entire minor leagues in batting average at .479 through 51 plate appearances. He hasn't struck out in his last 39 trips to the plate. And he has launched three home runs in his last six games. Since I began naming "prospects of the week" at the beginning of last season, there has never been an easier choice.
I applaud Arroyo for his reduced strikeout rate, now 7.8% compared to 13.9% last season with Richmond. But when you've almost literally registered a hit in half your at-bats, odds are your K% is going to dip. He'll likely regress. We'll see how often Arroyo is striking out in a month or so when he returns to earth.
Until then, let's revel in the ridiculousness of Arroyo's sizzling hot start. He leads Triple-A in a few other nice categories, too. Like wRC+ (246), wOBA (.548), and OPS (1.260). Just when will the Giants' brass give in? Be patient, fans. You'll wear yourselves out.
