As a weekly reminder of who's doing good things down in the minors, Giant Potential will name a "Prospect of the Week" every Thursday afternoon, along with a few honorable mentions, highlighting the best of San Francisco Giants hopefuls. It's week three, and instead of handing the title to the obvious choice, I'm going to go the route of honoring the player who was most instrumental in making a perfect feat possible. Saving the perfect game twice, and having a stellar week at the plate, as well, it's Dominican outfielder Sandro Fabian.
OF, Sandro Fabian
- Age: 19
- Hometown: Santo Domingo, D.R.
- Height/Weight: 6'1", 180 lbs
- Signed: 2014
- Key Stats: 7 H, 3 2B, 2 HR, .842 SLG
It was a slow start to the 2017 campaign for still-teenager Sandro Fabian. Through his first 13 games in the South Atlantic League, totaling 58 plate appearances, Fabian struck out 25.9% and accrued an OPS of .576. In the five games since, Fabian stroked three doubles and two home runs, the latter of which happened yesterday in an offensive outburst from the usually runs-subdued GreenJackets.
The solid week has his slash line up at .268/.286/.451, which is still a far cry from what he's likely capable of. A little concerning is Fabian's lone walk in 79 plate appearances, though the free-swinging right-hander has never been known for his walk rate. Almost at April's end, Fabian rate is 2.7% lower than 2016.
His hero performance came in Tuesday night's masterpiece from Domenic Mazza. Fabian showcased his athleticism, speed, and fearlessness in two spectacular game-saving catches in right field. And thanks to the Lexington Legends' agreement to air home games on MiLB.TV, we're able to see video proof of Fabian's defense, as well as his home run power.
An obvious special mention here for Domenic Mazza. You can read about his perfect game here.
